Rethinking community with an inclusive point of view
Between February and March 2025, our member Olivia Longo participated in the course on sensory disabilities curated by our member Daniela Fiordalisi (with Francesca Bosetti). The course, which aimed to provide an overview regarding the disabilities, particularly visual and hearing.
It was pointed out that disability, as defined by theWHO, is a condition that affects a person’s autonomy. During the course, the topic of visual disability, defined by Law 138 of 2001, which also includes people who are visually impaired, a visual condition too often not perceived as a serious disability by society.
Topics touched on in the course: the role of the white cane and the guide dog, the importance of theBraille alphabet, the different types of hearing aids and of sign language.
There was also an opportunity to interact with a person who is deaf-blind person, to break down the barriers caused by lack of knowledge and showing the communication tools available.
