Monuments and cultural routes of Brescia’s Vantiniano cemetery
In 2022, the research contract “The city of memory in the capital of culture: knowledge and enhancement of the Vantinian cemetery of Brescia” between the City of Brescia – Administrative Coordination and Cemetery Services Sector and the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture, Land, Environment and Mathematics (DICATAM) of the University of Brescia, under the scientific responsibility of Ivana Passamani.
Following the phase of research, survey and knowledge of the entire site, which confirmed the importance of the Vantiniano, Italy’s first monumental cemetery (1815) and a compositional reference for many Italian cemeteries of the 19th century thanks to Rodolfo Vantini’s unified architectural layout and the relationship it establishes with the city, five cultural visiting routes were conceived and designed, proposed according to the criteria of ‘accessibility for all.
Inclusive communication was pursued through seven tactile panels:
- Two tactile panels with general floor plans were placed at the entrances to the site
- Five tactile panels present the different thematic paths for the enhancement of Brescia’s Vantiniano Cemetery.
A simple and unambiguous layout, applied to all panels, and clear and accessible content, expressed through a process of graphical simplification, were provided. The embossed representation expresses lines and volumes in an essential way in order to allow the perception of shape by touch. Three reliefs and different textures have been applied; raised lines and symbols explained in the legends. The texts are in Italian, English, Braille Italian and English braille
