What do we do at Citislab? We work for Design 4All

We believe that accessibility to culture is an inalienable right for every person

By closing our eyes, we immerse ourselves in an experience that goes beyond sight to embrace the world with the senses. Setting aside for a moment the sensory dimension of sight, we open ourselves to other senses, particularly touch, which becomes the essential bridge between our corporeality and the external world. Our mission is based on this premise: we aim for maximum accessibility in the communication of cultural, environmental and landscape assets, creating tactile paths designed for the blind but, at the same time, sensory paths designed to be enjoyed by all.

In our approach, we categorically reject the distinction between normally understood communication and communication intended for people with sensory or cognitive disabilities. We firmly believe that accessibility to cultural and environmental heritage should not be the prerogative of a few, but a inalienable right for each individual. For this reason, we have designed and implemented a series of microarchitectures and installations, such as the tactile sensory panels, which enable anyone to explore and appreciate the landscape and cultural heritage.

Citislab's mission is to make the space around us accessible to everyone
Citislab's mission is to make the space around us accessible to everyone

Our approach is inspired by the principles of “Design for all“, overcoming the oculocentrism that characterizes Western society. This means that, in our work, the sense of sight is no longer the only tool for interpreting the world: the tactile maps, i tactile tables and the microarchitectures are integrated with texts in clear and Braille alphabets, creating multisensory experiences comprehensive and innovative. Modern technologies, in synergy with state-of-the-art design solutions, make it possible to create accessible routes that not only facilitate the enjoyment of cultural content, but also transform the entire experience into a journey of discovery for each user.

Our vision is expressed and realized through each of our products and installations, breaking down barriers to accessing culture. Through the use of integrated technological solutions and inclusive design, we work to make the sensory experience universal, so that every person can perceive the beauty and richness of environmental and cultural heritage.

Our commitment results in the creation of pathways that stimulate the senses and invitedirect interaction with the surrounding environment. We believe that normality should not be limited to the ability to live with dignity, but should also include the right to access forms of communication that enhance each and every aspect of daily living. For this reason, each of our projects aims to foster the transmission of landscape and cultural content in an innovative and inclusive way.

Through the adoption of design practices that break down traditional barriers and promote a multisensory experience, we work to transform the way we we perceive and communicate culture. Our goal is to ensure that every individual, regardless of their sensory abilities, can access and appreciate the richness of our heritage. In this way, we are committed to building a future in which the cultural heritage communication is truly anexperience for everyone, without exceptions and without limits.
