Multisensory reading of a landscape: communication for all

Sebino peat bogs as an example of application

The research workshop project “Re-knowing the Peatlands Landscape” was framed within the larger project “I like Peatlands” initiated under the Cariplo calls for proposals of 2016. The scientific responsibility was held by Olivia Longo and Ivana Passamani.
The project was funded by Cariplo, while coordination was the responsibility of the Nature Reserve Management Authority Sebino peat bogs in a Network agreement with theUniversity of Brescia. Involved as partners, in addition to UNIBS, the Province of Brescia (innovation and services to municipalities area), the Franciacorta Foundation, l’Natura Life Association and other entities.
The proposed key to re-knowing the landscape of the Peatlands was entirely set on the multisensoriality.
I five senses thus formed the common thread of the different activities: lectures, workshops, laboratories and exhibition.
The meaning of re-knowing the landscape refers to the search for clues and peculiarities to interpret that place in a new way.
In the area of the Peatlands, in fact, man and his activities can be seen as at odds with nature: the latter assumes a dominant role here by virtue of its possibilities to preserve a wild and uncontrollable identity.
The proposed working method aimed to bring humans closer to these prerogatives by using a mixture of methodologies produced by the combination of technological approaches, such as photography and digital video, with natural approaches that separate the human emotional sphere from the external world: the five senses.
Each working group was assigned a sense (smell, sight, hearing, touch, taste) that was the filter through which to propose a novel interpretation of the places and the development of ideas for their enhancement.

The project also aimed at fostering the growth and active inclusion of the local community by strengthening the relationship with the Reserve through innovative models of education and awareness of landscape heritage protection.
